|EF||Autofocus lens designed both for Canon full frame and APS-C SLR cameras.|
|L||Professional lens with high quality optics and robust build. Meets the highest standards and provides excellent performance and flawless image quality unachievable with traditional optical technologies.|
|IS||The lens is equipped with optical image stabilizer. The stabilizer allows to increase the shutter speed by several stops and shoot handheld in such lighting conditions and at such focal lengths where without stabilizer you will have to use tripod, decrease the shutter speed and/or increase the ISO setting which can lead to blurry and noisy images.|
|USM||The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor to provide very fast and virtually silent autofocus. Learn more|

Design and Features
Canon’s first macro lens to feature Image Stabilizer. A high quality medium telephoto macro lens designed for professional photographers.
The lens is a part of Canon’s series of Luxury lenses notable for their excellent build quality and robust design. The lens barrel is of moderate weight, dust-proof and water-resistant, made of high-quality plastic. The lens mount is metallic. The focusing ring is ribbed and rubberized, well damped, moves very smoothly, has reasonable width and angle of rotation of 180 degrees for comfortable focusing.
The lens features AF/MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Full-Time Manual Focus.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens features focusing distance range limiter which allows to choose between the following focusing distance ranges:
|FULL||Full range of focusing distances.|
|0.3 m - 0.5 m||Range of focusing distances suitable for shooting nearby subjects.|
|0.5 m - ∞||Range of focusing distances suitable for shooting distant subjects.|
By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 67 mm which are easy to find. They are also inexpensive.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor, the autofocus is virtually silent and very fast.
The lens features optical image stabilizer, which, according to the manufacturer, compensates up to 4 stops of shutter speed. Theoretically it allows to capture sharp images of static subjects at shutter speeds down to 1/6 second(*).
* without the need to increase ISO sensitivity and/or use a tripod, at the same lighting conditions and at the same aperture
The image stabilizer does not have any specialized mode of operation, but is capable of automatic detection of panning and then corrects camera shake only in one direction.
It is often thought that image blur caused by camera shake can be prevented by using a tripod. Actually, however, even using a tripod may result in image blur because of tripod vibration caused by mirror or shutter movement at the time of exposure. The image stabilizer automatically differentiates the frequency of the vibration from that of camera shake, and changes algorithm to correct image blur caused by slight tripod vibration.
The image stabilizer has Hybrid IS technology which corrects not only angle but also shift camera shake, which is more pronounced in close-range shooting when a camera moves parallel to the imaging scene. Hybrid IS dramatically enhances the effects of image stabilization during shooting, including macro shooting, which had proven difficult for conventional image stabilization technologies.
The lens supports a full range of accessories including Tripod Mount D, Macro Lite adaptor 67, EF12 II and EF25 II extension tubes. The tripod mount attaches to the lens without the need for an adaptor enabling quick portrait or landscape switching without having to reframe the camera. Speedlites MR-14EX and MT-24EX can be attached using the MacroLite adaptor.
For general information on macro lenses please refer to the article dedicated to Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro USM lens.
Low dispersion elements (AD, ED, LD, HLD, SD, UD etc) and fluorite elements minimize chromatic aberrations and ensure excellent sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture.
The sharpness is excellent at the center and very good at the edges of the frame already wide open.
