Design and Features
A lens with the most popular focal length for portraiture in the days of 35 mm film photography. Also one of the fastest lens in its class (one F-stop faster than conventional 135 mm lenses), suitable for available and low-lighting conditions, including indoor portraits and sports. Images from this lens come with a sense of subject isolation, very smooth background blur and a moderate compression of perspective. Such images are very appealing to the eyes compared to the photos taken with standard prime lenses.
The lens is a part of Canon’s series of Luxury lenses notable for their excellent build quality and robust design. The lens barrel is heavy, made of metal. The lens mount is metallic. The focusing ring is ribbed and rubberized, well damped, moves very smoothly, has reasonable width and angle of rotation of 130 degrees for comfortable focusing.
The lens features AF/MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Full-Time Manual Focus.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens features focusing distance range limiter which allows to choose between the following focusing distance ranges:
|0.9 m - ∞||Full range of focusing distances.|
|1.6 m - ∞||Range of focusing distances suitable for shooting distant subjects.|
By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 72 mm which are easy to find. However, filters of such size are more expensive and mainly used with professional lenses.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor, the autofocus is virtually silent and very fast.
Low dispersion elements (AD, ED, LD, HLD, SD, UD etc) and fluorite elements minimize chromatic aberrations and ensure excellent sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture.
The sharpness is excellent at the center of the frame at any given aperture. The edges are very good at F/2-2.8 and excellent at subsequent apertures. The image contrast is high and the background blur is very smooth and pleasant at large apertures. The subjects look almost three dimensional at large apertures due to high micro contrast and smooth transition between in-focus and out-of-focus areas of the image.
