Design and Features
Professional macro telephoto prime lens which offers magnification ratio of 1:1 without additional accessory. The longest macro lens in Canon’s lineup. Large working distance is especially useful for shooting insects.
The lens is a part of Canon’s series of Luxury lenses notable for their excellent build quality and robust design. The lens barrel is large, heavy, made of metal. The lens mount is metallic. The focusing ring is ribbed and rubberized, wide, well damped, moves very smoothly and has angle of rotation of 250 degrees for comfortable focusing.
The lens features AF/MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Full-Time Manual Focus.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens features focusing distance range limiter which allows to choose between the following focusing distance ranges:
|0.48 m - ∞||Full range of focusing distances.|
|1.5 m - ∞||Range of focusing distances suitable for shooting distant subjects.|
By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 72 mm which are easy to find. However, filters of such size are more expensive and mainly used with professional lenses.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor, the autofocus is virtually silent but slow. However fast autofocus generally is not important in the genre of macrophotography.
For general information on macro lenses please refer to the article dedicated to Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro USM lens.
Low dispersion elements (AD, ED, LD, HLD, SD, UD etc) and fluorite elements minimize chromatic aberrations and ensure excellent sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture.
The lens incorporates a floating system that provides correction of aberrations and ensures constantly high image quality at the entire range of focusing distances from infinity down to the closest focusing distance. Learn more
