|EF||Autofocus lens designed both for Canon full frame and APS-C SLR cameras.|
|L||Professional lens with high quality optics and robust build. Meets the highest standards and provides excellent performance and flawless image quality unachievable with traditional optical technologies.|
|IS||The lens is equipped with optical image stabilizer. The stabilizer allows to increase the shutter speed by several stops and shoot handheld in such lighting conditions and at such focal lengths where without stabilizer you will have to use tripod, decrease the shutter speed and/or increase the ISO setting which can lead to blurry and noisy images.|
|USM||The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor to provide very fast and virtually silent autofocus. Learn more|

The lens barrel is of moderate weight, dust-proof and water-resistant, made of high-quality plastic. The lens mount is metallic.
The lens features a zoom lock lever to keep the zoom ring fixed at the shortest focal length of 24 mm. This function is convenient for carrying a camera with the lens on a strap because it prevents the lens from extending.
The lens features AF/MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Full-Time Manual Focus.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 77 mm which are easy to find. However, filters of such size are more expensive and mainly used with professional lenses.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
The lens features optical image stabilizer, which, according to the manufacturer, compensates up to 4 stops of shutter speed. Theoretically it allows to capture sharp images of static subjects at shutter speeds down to 1/4 second at focal length of 70 mm(*).
* without the need to increase ISO sensitivity and/or use a tripod, at the same lighting conditions and at the same aperture
The image stabilizer does not have any specialized mode of operation, but is capable of automatic detection of panning and then corrects camera shake only in one direction.
The image stabilizer has Hybrid IS technology which corrects not only angle but also shift camera shake, which is more pronounced in close-range shooting when a camera moves parallel to the imaging scene. Hybrid IS dramatically enhances the effects of image stabilization during shooting, including macro shooting, which had proven difficult for conventional image stabilization technologies.
The LOCK/MACRO switch is responsible both for zoom lock and switching to macro mode at focal length of 70 mm. The magnification ratio of 0.7x and working distance of only 3 cm are available at 70 mm. The efficiency of stabilizer during close-up shooting reduces down to 2.5 stops.
