|EF||Autofocus lens designed both for Canon full frame and APS-C SLR cameras.|
|L||Professional lens with high quality optics and robust build. Meets the highest standards and provides excellent performance and flawless image quality unachievable with traditional optical technologies.|
|IS||The lens is equipped with optical image stabilizer. The stabilizer allows to increase the shutter speed by several stops and shoot handheld in such lighting conditions and at such focal lengths where without stabilizer you will have to use tripod, decrease the shutter speed and/or increase the ISO setting which can lead to blurry and noisy images.|
|USM||The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor to provide very fast and virtually silent autofocus. Learn more|

Design and Features
The lens is a part of Canon’s series of Luxury lenses notable for their excellent build quality and robust design. The lens barrel is large, heavy, dust-proof and water-resistant, made of metal. The lens mount is metallic.
The lens has a very wide focal range. Formally it is the advantage, however in practice it causes certain problems with compensation of optical aberrations and equally high image quality at the entire focal range.
The lens has a push/pull zoom mechanism - change of the focal length is performed by longitudinal movement of the zoom ring. Push/pull zooming allows for faster change of focal length, however conventional method based on the rotation of the zoom ring provides more accurate and smooth zooming.
The operational feel (tightness) of the zoom ring can be adjusted as desired by the corresponding SMOOTH - TIGHT ring. Turn the adjustment ring towards the word SMOOTH to reduce the zooming touch, or towards TIGHT to increase it. To prevent unintended zooming when not shooting, it is recommended to turn the adjustment ring towards the word TIGHT until it stops.
The lens features AF/MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Full-Time Manual Focus.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens features focusing distance range limiter which allows to choose between the following focusing distance ranges:
|0.7 m - ∞||Full range of focusing distances.|
|2.5 m - ∞||Range of focusing distances suitable for shooting distant subjects.|
By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 77 mm which are easy to find. However, filters of such size are more expensive and mainly used with professional lenses.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
The lens features optical image stabilizer, which, according to the manufacturer, compensates up to 3 stops of shutter speed. Theoretically it allows to capture sharp images of static subjects at shutter speeds down to 1/37 second at focal length of 300 mm(*).
* without the need to increase ISO sensitivity and/or use a tripod, at the same lighting conditions and at the same aperture
At the choice of the photographer the image stabilizer can operate in one of the following modes:
|Mode 1||Corrects vertical and horizontal camera shake. Mainly effective for shooting still subjects.|
|Mode 2||Corrects vertical camera shake during following shots in a horizontal direction. Corrects horizontal camera shake during following shots in a vertical direction.|
