Design and Features
The lens is a part of Canon’s series of Luxury lenses notable for their excellent build quality and robust design. The lens barrel is large, heavy, made of metal. The lens mount is metallic.
The lens features AF/MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Full-Time Manual Focus.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens features focusing distance range limiter which allows to choose between the following focusing distance ranges:
|3.5 m - ∞||Full range of focusing distances.|
|8.5 m - ∞||Range of focusing distances suitable for shooting distant subjects.|
By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 77 mm which are easy to find. However, filters of such size are more expensive and mainly used with professional lenses.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor, the autofocus is virtually silent and very fast.
The lens does not feature optical image stabilizer. It is a significant disadvantage for a lens of such class - the need for image stabilization only grows with increasing of focal length. In order to obtain sharp images with this lens, you will need to use a tripod or shutter speeds not longer than 1/400 second which may require in some cases increasing the ISO setting and will lead to noisy images.
