|EF||Autofocus lens designed both for Canon full frame and APS-C SLR cameras.|
|L||Professional lens with high quality optics and robust build. Meets the highest standards and provides excellent performance and flawless image quality unachievable with traditional optical technologies.|
|IS||The lens is equipped with optical image stabilizer. The stabilizer allows to increase the shutter speed by several stops and shoot handheld in such lighting conditions and at such focal lengths where without stabilizer you will have to use tripod, decrease the shutter speed and/or increase the ISO setting which can lead to blurry and noisy images.|
|II||Second version of the lens.|
|USM||The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor to provide very fast and virtually silent autofocus. Learn more|

Design and Features
The lens is a part of Canon’s series of Luxury lenses notable for their excellent build quality and robust design. The lens barrel is large, heavy, dust-proof and water-resistant, made of metal. The lens mount is metallic.
The lens features AF - PF - MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Full-Time Manual Focus.|
|PF||Power focus mode. Operating the playback ring enables smooth focus change at a set speed. The FOCUS PRESET switch should be set at OFF. This focusing mode is useful for changing focus when shooting movies.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens allows to preset any specific focusing distance and instantly focus on it even while you are shooting a different subject. This function operates in any focusing mode. To preset the focusing distance, set the FOCUS PRESET switch to ON or , press the shutter button halfway to focus the distance you want to preset and press the lens SET button. The focusing distance will be preset. To focus on preset distance, use the playback ring. By turning the playback ring to the left or right, the focus shifts as far as the preset distance. Focus will shift freely released of autofocusing while the playback ring is still turned.
During autofocus operation, you can press the AF Stop button of the lens to temporarily pause autofocus. This lets you stop autofocus whenever any unwanted obstacle comes closer to the camera than the moving subject you are tracking. If the shutter button is still pressed halfway when the AF Stop button is released, autofocusing will continue as before. The AF Stop function also works in continuous autofocus mode. You can change the functions of the AF Stop button using the camera's custom functions menu.
The lens features focusing distance range limiter which allows to choose between the following focusing distance ranges:
|FULL||Full range of focusing distances.|
|4.5 m - 16 m||Range of focusing distances suitable for shooting nearby subjects.|
|16 m - ∞||Range of focusing distances suitable for shooting distant subjects.|
By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.
A fluorine coating has been applied to the outer surfaces of the front and rear lens elements to repel particles of dust, water or oil drops for easier cleaning of the lens surfaces.
The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor, the autofocus is virtually silent and very fast.
The lens features optical image stabilizer, which, according to the manufacturer, compensates up to 4 stops of shutter speed. Theoretically it allows to capture sharp images of static subjects at shutter speeds down to 1/37 second*).
*) without the need to increase ISO sensitivity and/or use a tripod, at the same lighting conditions and at the same aperture
At the choice of the photographer the image stabilizer can operate in one of the following modes:
|Mode 1||Corrects vertical and horizontal camera shake. Mainly effective for shooting still subjects.|
|Mode 2||Corrects vertical camera shake during following shots in a horizontal direction. Corrects horizontal camera shake during following shots in a vertical direction.|
|Mode 3||Corrects camera shake only during exposure. During panning shots, corrects camera shake during exposure only in one direction the same as Mode 2. Effective for following fast and irregulary moving subjects.|
It is often thought that image blur caused by camera shake can be prevented by using a tripod. Actually, however, even using a tripod may result in image blur because of tripod vibration caused by mirror or shutter movement at the time of exposure. The image stabilizer automatically differentiates the frequency of the vibration from that of camera shake, and changes algorithm to correct image blur caused by slight tripod vibration.
