|EF||Autofocus lens designed both for Canon full frame and APS-C SLR cameras.|
|IS||The lens is equipped with optical image stabilizer. The stabilizer allows to increase the shutter speed by several stops and shoot handheld in such lighting conditions and at such focal lengths where without stabilizer you will have to use tripod, decrease the shutter speed and/or increase the ISO setting which can lead to blurry and noisy images.|
|II||Second version of the lens.|
|USM||The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor to provide very fast and virtually silent autofocus. Learn more|

Design and Features
The lens barrel is heavy, made of high-quality plastic. The lens mount is metallic.
The lens features a zoom lock lever to keep the zoom ring fixed at the shortest focal length of 70 mm. This function is convenient for carrying a camera with the lens on a strap because it prevents the lens from extending.
The lens features AF/MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Full-Time Manual Focus.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens features the LCD display which works in 3 modes and allows to see the information about: (1) focusing distance and depth of field, (2) focal length, and (3) camera shake amount. Switching is performed by the dedicated Mode button located on the barrel of the lens. Pressing the Mode button for more than 2 seconds, user can select between black text on a white background or white text on a black background.
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 67 mm which are easy to find. They are also inexpensive.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
This is the second Canon lens equipped with Nano USM, a new type of focusing motor that combines the benefits of a ring USM (ultrasonic motor) for high-speed AF during still photo shooting and lead-screw type STM (stepping motor) for smooth and quiet movie AF.
The lens features optical image stabilizer, which, according to the manufacturer, compensates up to 4 stops of shutter speed. Theoretically it allows to capture sharp images of static subjects at shutter speeds down to 1/19 second at focal length of 300 mm*).
*) without the need to increase ISO sensitivity and/or use a tripod, at the same lighting conditions and at the same aperture
The image stabilizer does not have any specialized mode of operation and is not capable of automatic detection of panning.
