The first EF-M Macro Lens for the Canon EOS M Camera System, which features Image Stabilization and a pair of built-in miniature Macro Lites to enhance image quality during close-up photography.
The lens barrel is compact, lightweight, made of plastic. The lens mount is plastic.
The focusing ring is not physically coupled with the focusing mechanism and works electronically (focus-by-wire) - turning of the ring actuates an electric motor that moves the focusing group of the lens to the proper position to achieve sharp focus.
The lens lacks focusing mode switch, therefore you have to set the automatic or manual focus mode from the camera.
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 43 mm which are easy to find. They are also inexpensive.
Aspherical elements (ASPH, XA) minimize spherical aberration, astigmatism, coma and ensure excellent sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture.
Low dispersion elements (AD, ED, LD, HLD, SD, UD etc) and fluorite elements minimize chromatic aberrations and ensure excellent sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture.
The lens features optical image stabilizer, which, according to the manufacturer, compensates up to 3.5 stops of shutter speed. Theoretically it allows to capture sharp images of static subjects at shutter speeds down to 1/2 second(*).

The image stabilizer does not have any specialized mode of operation and is not capable of automatic detection of panning.
The image stabilizer has Hybrid IS technology which corrects not only angle but also shift camera shake, which is more pronounced in close-range shooting when a camera moves parallel to the imaging scene. Hybrid IS dramatically enhances the effects of image stabilization during shooting, including macro shooting, which had proven difficult for conventional image stabilization technologies.
The housing is retractable. The part of the housing around the front element is tapered thus minimizing the risk that the lens will cast a shadow on the subject during close-up photography.
The lens provides magnification ratio of 1:1 at minimum focusing distance of 9.7 cm. At Super Macro mode the minimum focusing distance is reduced to 9.3 cm, the working distance is 13 mm only and the magnification ratio is 1.2:1.
Filters are installed on a dedicated ES-22 lens hood.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
Two curved LED flash units surround the front element of the lens, with the ability to illuminate both simultaneously, or one at a time: the switching can be performed through the corresponding button located at the bottom part of the housing.
Users are also able to adjust the brightness of the Macro Lites between “bright” and “dim” settings. Due to macro-flashes it is possible to shoot at faster shutter speeds and "freeze" subject movement when shooting a close-up range, shoot at lower ISO settings and get more accurate color reproduction, emphasize the dimension and depth of the macro scene.
The lens is not compatible with EF 12 II and EF 25 II extension rings.
