|HD||The HD multi-layer coating is applied to the surface of lens elements. It boosts light transmission, ensures sharp and high contrast images, minimizes ghosting and flares. The HD coating reduces reflections 50% more efficiently in comparison with traditional smc coating throughout the visible spectrum and has exceptional hardness, which ensures its increased durability.|
|DA||Autofocus lens for Pentax APS-C digital SLR cameras. Has no aperture control ring and only supports electronic aperture control from the camera.|
|WR||Water Resistant lens.|
|DC||The lens is equipped with micromotor to provide moderately fast and quiet autofocus.|
|RE||The lens features retractable mechanism for easy storage and portability.|

Design and Features
Kit lens for Pentax digital SLR cameras with very compact and lightweight retractable water-resistant barrel made of plastic down to the lens mount. The zoom ring is narrow and inconvenient, covered with fine ribs in order to provide good grip and prevent slippage of fingers. The front part of the barrel substantially extends with zooming to focal length of 18mm doubling the physical length of the lens. The focusing ring is even more narrow than the zoom ring and also inconvenient. It works electronically (focus-by-wire): you have to turn the camera on in order to be able to perform manual focusing. There is a slight lag between the rotation of the ring and actual moving of the focusing group inside the lens, therefore you should forget about the precise manual focusing with this lens. The lens offers magnification ratio of 1:4.3 at focal length of 50mm and the closest focusing distance.
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 58 mm which are easy to find. They are also inexpensive.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
A fluorine coating has been applied to the outer surface of the front lens element to repel water or oil drops for easier cleaning of the lens surface.
Low-profile lens hood is a part of the package. It was designed for easy carrying without the need to remove it from the lens for storage.
The lens is equipped with micromotor, the autofocus is low noisy and moderately fast. The lens features Quick-Shift Focus System: after autofocus is achieved, the focusing ring can be turned to adjust the focus manually. This feature eliminates the need for changing the focus mode to MF.
Despite the compact size in collapsed state, this lens does not offer any significant advantages over the previous version of the kit lens, smc Pentax-DA 18-55/3.5-5.6 AL WR: the focal range is more narrow at the telephoto end, the lens speed is slower at the wide angle, the mount is made of plastic and the focusing ring now works electronically. The optical formula remains the same and the built-in micromotor does not provide more efficient autofocus.
