|AF||Autofocus lens with mechanical transmission of the aperture value to the camera. Designed for Nikon SLR cameras equipped with built-in motor. The autofocus will not be available with the rest of Nikon SLR cameras.|
|DC||The lens is capable to alter the blur of out-of-focus areas (both foreground and background) via spherical aberration control. Defocus Control lenses are sometimes confused with the soft focus effect, but these are not soft focus lenses, as they do not introduce spherical aberration over the whole field.|
|D||The lens transmits distance information to the camera.|

Nikkor 105mm F/2D DC is one of two Nikon portrait lenses with Defocus Control function which allows to correct the spherical aberration of the lens and obtain very smooth and soft background or foreground blur. The production of the lens was started in 1993 and currently it is one of the oldest lenses in Nikon lineup.
The lens barrel is of moderate weight, made of metal. The lens mount is metallic.
The lens features A - M focus mode switch.
|A||Autofocus mode without manual override.|
|M||Manual focus mode.|
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 72 mm which are easy to find. However, filters of such size are more expensive and mainly used with professional lenses.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
- The autofocus will not be available with Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000-D3400, D5000-D5600 SLR cameras.
The lens is equipped with special Defocus Image Control ring with the scale marked as follows: F - 5.6 - 4 - 2.8 - 2 - o - 2 - 2.8 - 4 - 5.6 - R. The ring is responsible for the level of blur of background (R) or foreground (F). It is recommended to set the same value as the aperture you shooting at.
