|AF-S||The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor to provide very fast and virtually silent autofocus. Learn more|
|DX||The lens is designed only for Nikon APS-C digital SLR cameras.|
|G||The lens has no aperture control ring and only supports electronic aperture control from the camera. G lenses provide distance information to the camera as D-type lenses.|
|VR||The lens is equipped with optical image stabilizer. The stabilizer allows to increase the shutter speed by several stops and shoot handheld in such lighting conditions and at such focal lengths where without stabilizer you will have to use tripod, decrease the shutter speed and/or increase the ISO setting which can lead to blurry and noisy images.|

The lens uses front filters with standard size of 52 mm which are easy to find. They are also inexpensive.
It should be noted that most lenses of the system have such diameter of the filter thread, that is why if you will purchase additional lens with similar focal length and/or speed, you probably will be able to share filters between them.
Aspherical elements (ASPH, XA) minimize spherical aberration, astigmatism, coma and ensure excellent sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture.
The lens features optical image stabilizer, which, according to the manufacturer, compensates up to 3 stops of shutter speed. Theoretically it allows to capture sharp images of static subjects at shutter speeds down to 1/7 second at focal length of 55 mm(*).
* without the need to increase ISO sensitivity and/or use a tripod, at the same lighting conditions and at the same aperture
The image stabilizer does not have any specialized mode of operation, but is capable of automatic detection of panning and then corrects camera shake only in one direction.
The filter thread ROTATES during focusing which does not allow convenient use such types of filters which require a specific orientation (f.e. polarizing and gradient).
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G VR is a typical kit lens in terms of good image quality for the small amount of money. It's not the lens of a dream especially given its mediocre build quality. All in all 18-55 VR is a good kit lens especially if you will get it almost for free with your first Nikon SLR camera.
