A subjective look at Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm F/1.4 R @ Fujifilm X-Pro1. Part 2 — Optical Results

For the purpose of this review Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm F/1.4 R was used with Fujifilm X-Pro1.

Fujifilm X-Pro1 is a company’s first APS-C digital mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, announced on January 9, 2012. It has X-Trans CMOS sensor with resolution of 4896×3264 px (16 MP) and ISO range 200-6400 in normal mode. The camera uses CDAF only. Has RGBW LCD display 3″ with resolution of 1.23 MP. Allows to capture video with Full HD resolution @ 24 fps. Supports SD/SDHC and SDXC memory cards. It’s a compact (139×81.8×42.5 mm) and lightweight (400 g without battery, memory card and protective cap) camera.

The images which illustrate this review were developed in Capture One 7.1.6 WITHOUT correction of distortion, vignetting and lateral chromatic aberrations, WITHOUT sharpening and increasing of overall contrast, brightness, saturation and WITHOUT changing of any other settings, except for vividness.

Visually the lens is sharp at the center of the frame already at F/1.4 and the sharpness becomes phenomenal with closing of the aperture by one or several stops! The edges of the frame can be hardly evaluated at F/1.4-2 without test chart but do not lag behind the center with further closing of the aperture which can be seen at the images where the subject occupies entire or most part of the frame. The image microcontrast of the image is great — the color transitions are smooth and the close-up subjects look almost three-dimensional:

I tried hard but couldn’t see any distortion on the images.

Vignetting is strong at F/1.4 but it’s a typical drawback of fast standard primes. Vignetting won’t be a problem with closing of the aperture by F/2.8.

Lateral chromatic aberrations are so weak that can be really left unprocessed. Small traces of those aberrations can be observed only at the edges of contrast transitions. The aberrations won’t bother you if you shoot subjects on a strongly blurred background.

Longitudinal chromatic aberrations are strong at F/1.4, it’s the inevitable drawback of lenses of such class which you must simply accept and pass over. The aberration is mostly gone from F/4.

The background blur is a strong advantage of this standard prime — it is smooth and pleasant. Out-of-focus highlight have noticeable color outlining though. However their form remains circular up to F/2.8 at least at the center of the frame.
