A subjective look at Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G VR @ Nikon D40. Part 2 — Resistance to Flares

The resistance of the lens to flares is mediocre without dedicated petal lens hood. Many rays of light appear when the sun is located close to the edges of the frame. Sometimes they can be very intense and large. Moreover some small but intense flares may also appear. In some cases there is also loss of overall contrast. It is interesting that such problems may take place even when the sun is located outside the frame.

Thus you should use the lens hood when shooting with this lens at the wide part of the focal range. In case when you don’t have the lens hood nearby at least try not to place the sun in the frame.

Fortnately the flares rarely appear in the frame with zooming to focal length of 55 mm.
