Design and Features
The build quality is excellent. The lens barrel is of moderate weight, dust-proof and water-resistant, made of high-quality plastic. The lens mount is metallic. The rubberized focusing ring has width of 20 mm, deeply ribbed in order to provide good grip and prevent slippage of fingers, well damped, moves smoothly in manual mode and has the angle of rotation of 120 degrees which is enough to perform precise manual focusing. Like all Pentax DA* series prime lenses, this model is equipped with the distance scale and a depth of field scale behind a window. The lens uses front element linear extension method for focusing however the front element does not extend beyond the lens barrel during focusing.
The lens features AF/MF focus mode switch.
|AF||Autofocus mode with Quick-Shift Focus System.|
|MF||Manual focus mode.|
The lens uses front filters with standard size of 58 mm which are easy to find. They are also inexpensive.
The filter thread does not rotate during focusing which allows convenient use of different types of filters (including but not limited to polarizing and gradient).
The front element is deeply recessed inside the lens barrel which eliminates the need for a lens hood. Nevertheless, Pentax offers a deep round bayonet-type lens hood as a part of the package. It features a slide-out window which enables rotation of polarizing filter without removing the lens hood. Unfortunately, the window cap cannot be attached or removed when the hood is mounted on the lens.
A fluorine coating has been applied to the outer surface of the front lens element to repel water or oil drops for easier cleaning of the lens surface.
The lens is equipped with ultrasonic motor, the autofocus is virtually silent and fast. The lens features Quick-Shift Focus System: after autofocus is achieved, the focusing ring can be turned to adjust the focus manually. This feature eliminates the need for changing the focus mode to MF.
Low dispersion elements (AD, ED, LD, HLD, SD, UD etc) and fluorite elements minimize chromatic aberrations and ensure excellent sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture.
The lens incorporates a floating system that provides correction of aberrations and ensures constantly high image quality at the entire range of focusing distances from infinity down to the closest focusing distance. Learn more
The sharpness at the center of the frame is good wide open, very good at F/2 and excellent from F/2.8. The edges of the frame are mediocre at F/1.4-2, very good at F/2.8 and excellent from F/4. The image contrast is high and the background blur is very smooth and pleasant at large apertures. The subjects look almost three dimensional at large apertures due to high micro contrast and smooth transition between in-focus and out-of-focus areas of the image.
